Powers was born on May 3, 1892, a descendant of the Fraser, Ferris, Potter, and Johnson families, all early Isabella County (Mich.) pioneers. She was a teacher at Ganiard Elementary School in Mount Pleasant (Mich.). Powers was active in the Woman's Christian Temperance Union, Woman's Relief Corps, and the Westside Parent-Teacher Association. Temperance organization founded in Cleveland, Ohio in 1874. Campaigning against the use of alcohol and in favor of labor laws and prison reform, the W.C.T.U. became one of the largest and most influential women's organizations of the 19th century.
